Grog & drugs

Health care work is strongly influenced by the setting in which it takes place. Workers need to adapt their practice to suit their surroundings. It is very important that health care workers are aware of their personal safety working in the AOD sector.

Clients under the influence of grog and other drugs, or who are undergoing withdrawal, can suffer a range of symptoms from depression to psychosis. These can make them unpredictable, irrational and violent.

Health care workers also need to be aware of the risks associated with viruses such as HIV and hepatitis which are common among injecting drug users. Select an image to learn more about the settings in which AOD work takes place.
