Government polices and practices had far reaching consequences on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in reserves during the segregation era.

Practices on Reserves

People could no longer move freely around their own land.

Families were not always placed on the same reserve.

People could no longer hunt and gather their traditional foods.

People were not allowed to have ceremonies or corroborees.

People were not allowed to speak their language.
